Introducing David Kearse, author/screenwriter, and his new blog.

Writing and publishing “Blessed By The Best A Memoir By David Kearse Surviving Addiction: A Spiritual Journey.”

Now available on Amazon as an eBook, audiobook, paperback and hardcover.

Next on our publication list is a Romantic Novel, “Drumbeats,” about a boy and his drums who succeeds at singing and falls for an older stage and film director. Look for it soon. It’s a bisexual love story about overcoming the terrors of self.

    David Kearse

It is my intention to share what I have learned about writing and editing in my frequent blogs. As it is written on the back of my books, here are my credentials:

“The author of ‘Blessed By The Best, A Memoir By David Kearse, Surviving Addiction, A Spiritual Journey,’ is a former journalist (The Baltimore Sun) who now also writes screenplays, one of which has been optioned by a producer. He sustains an acting career in Hollywood. Having studied with some of the greats in theater, opera, improvisation, and creativity, he brings what he has learned to his memoir.”

“His long life” also survived alcohol addiction, as well as being gay in a hostile world, and he enjoys 52 years of recovery. David brings hope to the bemused and suicidal in a dangerous world.

So come along and blog with me. We can all learn somethiing and I look forward to your comments and your own personal writing experiences. Adelante!

  • Progress, Progress

The Montecito II is beginning to rise against the windows of my former apartment of 23 years and I am now gazing out my many new windows at the variegated Hollywood Hills from a higher floor. I call my new digs the David Kearse Atelier.

And from it I create blogs, record podcasts and write novels and screenplays. Currently, I am writing a Romantic Novel (bisexual) called THE THIRTEENTH STEP, about couples entangled in relationships in and outside 12-Step Programs. The 13th Step, you might guess, is verboten because it interferes with physical and mental sobriety. The step suggests Adam and Eve taking a bite out of that apple. You know what happened!

At the suggestion of a fellow author that also is a dear friend and a marketing guru, I am also offering consultations from a lifetime of study, therapy and experience with surviving  as a Gay professional in a straight world. This environment, from East to West Coasts, from South to North, often remains hostile in a time of social upheaval, despite some acceptance of Gay Marriage.

Therefore, my consultations include healing, mentoring and supporting those who may be facing an identity crisis. For those who like to write books and screenplays, as I do, I offer writing and editing consultation, in addition to screenplay reading and analysis. The cost per consultation is $125 an hour.

Meanwhile, to whet your appetite for my forthcoming novel, here again is an excerpt from THE THIRTEENTH STEP:

In the New York Theater District, Frank and Diana march across 46th Street toward a show business restaurant after the backers audition. Frank remains exhilarated by it all; Diana, more subdued.

“Tell me what you honestly think,” Frank asks.

“It went well, I guess,” Diana replies with reserve.

    “You guess?”

    “There was applause…”

“You’re not very enthusiastic,” Frank observes.

    “I’m not really a good judge…”

“As long as you liked it,” Frank says.

Diana looks upward and gestures at the billboards and buildings surrounding them in the Theater District.

“I hate all of this…this…” Diana blurts out.

    “All of what?”

“This…this make believe. It’s not real.”

“You know what it means to me…” Frank says.

“Yes, and I know it’s a way out of Madison Avenue. But there are other paths…”

Seated in a comfortable booth in the popular eatery with Diana, Frank reaches across the table and touches her hand.

“I would give it all up for you — if that’s what you want,” Frank declares.

    “I couldn’t ask you to do that…”

    “I need you.”

“It’s your thing, theater — giving it up would be a big mistake,” Diana asserts.

“The only mistake is not doing something about…us. Go ahead – tell  Chuck,” Frank says.

    Diana recoils.

“That’s out of the question — for now,” she says.

    “Then soon…”

Diana looks away, unsure of herself or what to do.

Frank clasps both of her hands in his — tightly. She gives an uncertain smile back at him.

The next day in her Wall Street cubicle, Diana sits at her desk in the Financial District eating a sandwich. Chuck sits next to her desk, eating a cold chicken leg.

There is tension in the air — on Chuck’s part.

“You seem so…so pensive…” Diana comments.

    “No problem,” Chuck responds.

“Want half of my sandwich?” she offers.

“No, no…that’s not it,” Chuck says. “Just wondering about…us.”

    “What’s wrong with…us?”

    Diana puts down her food.

“I just feel that…you’re not always there…with me.”

    “I try to be. I guess maybe…it’s my work…”

“Maybe you just need to have some fun — what about dinner and a movie tonight?” Chuck proposes. “I’ve got a pass for two uptown…”

“Wish I could, but I really need to stay home and work on a project — for my boss.”

“Then let’s make it tomorrow night…”

“I’m attending a City Club meeting at St. Bart’s…”

Unable to discern the truth, Chuck abruptly asserts:

“Listen, Diana, something is going on — what is it?”

    “I’m just…busy, that’s all.”

Diana moves toward Chuck and kisses him on the cheek. They both resume eating their lunch quietly.

Later that night in the Golden Lion Restaurant, Greenwich Village, Frank and Diana meet over drinks, hers a martini, his, a soft drink. They sit side-by-side in a booth.

“Do you think he suspects anything?” Frank asks.

“He knows something is going on.”

    “I love you, Diana.”

Drawing on her Al-Anon experience, Diana asks:

“Is this…child calling out to child — alcoholic to codependent?”

“No! At least, I hope not!” Frank exclaims.

    “I don’t want to hurt Chuck…”

Frank touches her hand reassuringly. He kisses her on the cheek, then passionately on the mouth.

    She responds uncertainly.

    “Forget about him!”

“We shouldn’t be doing this,” Diana says.

“I think we ought to be doing whatever our hearts tell us.”

“We could be friends. But I can’t sponsor you any longer…”

She pulls her hand out of Frank’s.

“Listen, Diana, I don’t want to let you go…”

“That probably would be best for all of us…

    “Both of us…”

“Chuck, too. I was going to marry him…”

“Maybe this wouldn’t have happened — if you were really meant to marry Chuck.”

    “I don’t know how — or why…” Diana retorts.

“We both feel something for each other…”

“Or are we just acting out…?”

Frank raises his glass to a waiter, who silently takes their beverages for refills.

“I didn’t want to hurt Chuck. But I know I did,” Frank admits.

“What does ‘The Big Book’ say about sex — is it selfish?”

“Listen,” Frank says earnestly, “my sober self feels bad enough about this…but my heart wants you.”

    The waiter returns with refills.

“it’s best if you go back to Roy for sponsorship. Let’s cool it — for a while,” Diana suggests.

Silently they pick up their drinks and look pensively at each other.

  • Excerpt from an upcoming novel

Moving day is over — or moving weeks, I should say. I was without internet, wi-fi and cable TV for a week and two days. Until Spectrum was able to drill a hole to the apartment below to allow the cable line to drop through to the first floor.

But now I’m back, blogging again, and here’s a new excerpt from my forthcoming Romantic Novel, THE THIRTEENTH STEP:

Meanwhile, Frank and Roy stroll past the Lincoln Square fountain toward the Metropolitan Opera House to attend a nighttime production.

“That Brooklyn soprano sings tonight, I believe,” Roy muses.

“I’m not in the mood for comedy,” Frank asserts.

“How’re things going with you?” Roy asks.

“You know, I’m crazy about Diana — but worried…she wants to cool it…”

    “Why?”

“Because of Chuck. I don’t want to hurt either of them.”

“Then, put down your drug of choice!”

    “Drug…?”

“The cost is too high,” Roy says, adding, “I had to give up obsessing on my wife’s drinking. It was finally lifted from me — after I got honest with myself.”

“Damn! That’s not what I wanted to hear…”

“It’s your choice,” Roy says. “We always have choices.”

They enter the front doors of the opera house.

    “Choices…”

“Be honest. And choose carefully!” Roy warns.

Inside Chuck’s Gramercy Park apartment, Chuck and Diana sit together on a sofa in front of a TV, its sound muted in the background.

Chuck mirrors Frank’s actions in taking Diana’s hand into his.

“Diana, you know how much I love you, but…there’s something I need to say.”

    “About our wedding?”

“In a way — yes. If there is to be a wedding…”

    “That sounds ominous,” Diana says.

“Our marriage can only work … if you let go of Frank.”

“But Chuck…you know I…I…” Diana falters.

Chuck becomes more agitated and passionate as he attempts to look deeply into her soul.

“I know you have feelings for him.”

    “You know…?”

“And I’m asking you to make a choice. If we are to go on. Get married…”

“I was only sponsoring him in the Al-Anon Program,” Diana says defensively. Her eyes well up.

“I wish I could believe that, but… you must let him go. He’s the third rail in our relationship.”

“I really must get home…” Diana says.

They both rise from the sofa. Diana heads for the door.

“Think about it — what you really want. What’s important to you,” Chuck advises.

  • Writing a New Novel

    Writer at Work
    Writer's Tool

It’s never easy, working on a new piece of fiction, but I’m doing it – again.

This will be my third novel, and it’s based on a screenplay by the same name, THE THIRTEENTH STEP.

    Here’s the logline:

When a Broadway playwright gets locked in an obsession with a woman who is engaged to marry another man, his life in a 12-Step recovery program and career are threatened as he struggles to let go of his demons and realize his ambitions.

And here is an excerpt from the novel:

After dinner, Frank and Diana relax at the dinner table over coffee. Kiki, the calico cat, is curled up in a nearby empty chair.

Diana sits back in a dreamy, receptive state of mind.

“You can cook for me anytime!” Diana exclaims happily.

“I’ve been thinking about you and Chuck. What you said — or didn’t say…”

    “Meaning…?”

    “Your feelings for him.”

“We were planning to get married…”

    Were?”

    “Why do you ask?

“There’s something I need to tell you…it’s hard to say…”

“There’s nothing you can’t tell me — you know that.”

“I’m not so sure…” Frank muses.

“Go ahead. You can trust me…”

Frank gets up from table, paces around it and Diana, summons courage and comes to a stop behind her chair.

“This is not supposed to happen in program,” he says,  “but…but…”

    “…What?”

“Diana – I’ve fallen in love with you and I don’t know what to do about it!”

    “Oh God!”

    “I’m hoping…you might feel the same way…”

Diana arises from her chair nervously — but is clearly touched by his confession.

    “I’m your sponsor…”

    “Look, I didn’t plan this — it just happened…”

    “Maybe it’s best we split…”

    “Is that the only solution?”

“I don’t know…” Diana says in her perplexion.

“Well then, listen to yourself — what do you hear?”

“That it’s all wrong, that we mustn’t do anything about it…”

As he comes close to her, she stares at Frank speechless. He puts his arm around her shoulder and gives her an exploratory kiss.

She responds at first reluctantly, then more passionately.

After a few seconds that seem like minutes to Diana, Frank takes Diana by the hand and leads her into his bedroom.

Soon she comes running out alone, in distress. He comes after her, persuasively, seductively.

He takes her arm gently and smiles. She allows him to kiss her.

He leads her back into the bedroom.

Kiki awakens from her nap and watches the couple as they disappear into his bedroom.

In his sparsely furnitured bedroom, Frank slowly but eagerly undresses Diana, who begins to respond to his touch. He feels her breasts. She gasps — at first with fear, but then pleasure.

He slowly lowers her onto his single bed. She looks up at him trustingly. He penetrates her and she takes a deep breath, relaxes and begins to enjoy the forbidden fruit.

Frank had fallen in love with her — it wasn’t just a fling — he really thought he loved her. And felt a little guilty about it….

  • Three Mass Murders, Two Book Releases

I cannot help but comment on the recent mass shootings that took place in California.

That they are tragic and appalling seems obvious. That the massacre in Monterey Park occurred at the beginning of the Chinese New Year appears ironic and disheartening.

Contrast the Shakespearean horror of 11 dead, and others hospitalized with gunshot injuries,  with the following day in Pasadena. All Saints Episcopal Church proceeded with its celebration of Lunar New Year.

And festive it was, indeed! Bright red lanterns and banners filled the church with joy. Weicheng’s Canterbury Choir, soloists, and Chinese singers and musicians embellished the celebration.

The service opened with a performance of lovely music played on the guzheng, known as the Chinese zither. A large Asian choir sang in Chinese with great delicacy and beauty.

The result — pure joy and aspiration. We needed that after the night before.

    AN APPLE A DAY

On the literary front, I am very pleased to announce that two of my books have been updated and published anew last week.

BLESSED BY THE BEST, Surviving Addiction: A Spiritual Journey, synthesizes my life experiences with entertainment greats, recovery from alcohol addiction, and spiritual growth. Here, synthesize means to “combine (a number of things) into a coherent whole.” That’s what I hope to have accomplished. Please read and give a review!

DRUMBEATS, a Romantic Novel of Triumph Over Terror, marks my fiction debut. Based on my screenplay of the same name, it details a bisexual romance in the entertainment industry as one young drummer-singer seeks to discover his sexual identity. Unfortunately, there must be a hate crime against Gays, undoubtedly sparked by the Republicans’ rhetorical campaign of fear and terror. There’s lots of glamour, too, from Los Angeles to Broadway to Britain’s Glyndebourne Opera Festival. Don’t forget to give it a review!

They are on Apple Books. As it appears on Google:

  • At Long Last, A New Edition

With annotations by noted author Scott Sayre, and more revealing emotional content in Chapter Eight, My Gay Identity, a new hardcover edition of BLESSED BY THE BEST A Memoir by David Kearse, Surviving Addiction, A Spiritual Journey, becomes available on Amazon.com and bydavidkearse.store.

It represents several months of collaborative work with Scott Sayre and two other teachers and authors, Martin Huld (Oxford University Press author) and Ron Pettie (artist in residence at the Los Angeles Arboretum).

In developing the concept of my tribe (my readers, my audience), I owe much to Scott’s weekly Marketing Group (https://www.100kclubla.us), where we studied and discussed Seth Godin’s THIS IS MARKETING, an altruistic approach to selling books, as I do.  Also, such wellness products as Gregory Gerritsen’s Shaklee vitamins, Valerie Wilson’s Macro Kitchen cookbooks and classes, and Lisa Berzack’s Holistic Transformational Coaching and Quantum Healing.

As a group, led by Scott, a computer whiz, we are developing a marketing funnel website that features our goods and consultation services, each member being recognized as an authority in his or her field. More on that soon.

Scott also develops his AWAKENED KITCHEN book website and yours truly works with James Shuster, another computer guru, on my By David Kearse Bookstore website. It features DRUMBEATS, a Romantic Bisexual Novel, and VESUVIO, a Romantic Thriller, in addition to BLESSED BY THE BEST.

So, look. Ask questions. Come on in. We truly would love to help you, those in our tribes. The “100k” in our website’s title refers to 100k ways of loving and healing. We want what you want and we, in our tribes, are most like you, and you like us.

See what we’d love to offer you.

  • New Material Added To Memoir

And so into the fray – it’s Christmas. And New Year’s, too! Good reading ahead!

My friend, Martin Wiech, posts a magnet on his auto that reads “Put Christ back into Christmas,” and I agree. While I do not drive much myself, I put my magnet on the fridge as a daily reminder.

But we do read throughout the holidays and into the next year, so I will shamelessly promote my newly revised memoir, BLESSED BY THE BEST A Memoir By David Kearse, Surviving Addiction, A Spiritual Journey. It’s got more emotional content about seeking my sexual identity in an oppressive atmosphere that never changed fully until the 1980s. And details on how I got sober after a long struggle.

A consumer of alcohol during the tragic assassinations of JFK, his brother, Bobby, and Martin Luther King, Jr. through 1968, I got sober November 2, 1969, and have remained so for the past 53 years, Thanks Be To God. In the memoir, I tell how I did it, after hitting bottom.

I also share my deepest learning experiences with great teachers in the entertainment world, for new actors, writers and directors to enjoy.

The memoir,  and two novels, DRUMBEATS and VESUVIO, all remain available in my new online bookstore, bydavidkearse.store.

DRUMBEATS is a Romantic (Bisexual) Novel about a young man who sings but prefers to play his drums for a living. He finds his musical career – and sexual identity – while working with an older theater director who mentors and manages him. With a little glamour thrown in – from New York to LA and on to Merrie Old England, and the Grammys to the Oscar.

VESUVIO takes us from Rome to the Amalfi Coast as a straight young American couple finds love – and danger – when they encounter a charismatic gunrunner to terrorists. This Romantic Thriller also examines ancient Pompeii and explores deep character from Paris to New York.

So give them a read, now and into the New year!

They’re also available on Amazon.com and Apple Books, of course.

  • Restored to Sanity Again

Not only have I been restored to sanity — by my Higher Power and the 12 Steps for 53 years – but America the Great, too, has seen the light.

Yes, there was a national sanitizing on the last great Election Day, during which voters of all parties, all persuasions, were awakened as they dug deeper into their hearts and that of this country.

They woke up. That’s somewhat different from what the Republicans like to define as “woke,” and use as a pejorative term. I first heard that term years ago, in a sermon by The Rev. Ed Bacon, then rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena. “How interesting,” I thought. And as a political practicality, I would rather be “woke” than not and do not understand the GOP objections to being in that state of mind.

But we woke up and voted our conscience. And fortunately, that included far fewer Election Deniers than were up for election. It also meant there was no red Wave – the GOP did not take over the United States. Democrats performed far better than expected and some analysts said they over-performed in many cases.

Here is the larger point: Will Americans continue to pay more attention to voting and elections, and examine their candidates’ certificates, or revert to times past when many, many, unfortunately, were perhaps far too uninformed? As a result, they often voted against their own best interests. That must stop.

It is said the 2024 national elections for President would be greatly influenced by this past 2022 Midterms and Republicans would surely nominate Trump, while state election controllers – Secretaries of State, for instance – would assure his victory and Democrats would never succeed again.

    Didn’t happen.

We go into 2024 with a better advantage than thought possible and must do everything we can to ensure fairness and integrity of not only elections but candidates and above all, the entire voting nation needs to become its watchdog.

Democracy came out well that Tuesday. Who would have thought?

And prevail, it must. That’s how we became the richest nation in world history. That’s how we became dominant. Yes, we’ve made mistakes, but we learn, as a country. And move on in the right direction. If there is to be a Democracy.

So vote on it. Think on. Love thy neighbor, for a change. Expand your horizons.

And thank you, Higher Power. Thank you, indeed!

Democracy came out well last Tuesday. Who would have thought?

And prevail, it must. That’s how we became the wealthiest nation in world history. That’s how we became dominant. So, yes, we’ve made mistakes, but we learn as a country. And move on in the right direction. If there is to be a Democracy.

So vote on it. Think about it. Love thy neighbor for a change. Expand your horizons.

And thank you, Higher Power. Thank you, indeed!
